Group Psychotherapy

"To be an effective agent for peace, you have to seek not only to change the community and the world. What is more difficult is to change yourself before you seek to change others."
– Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Group psychotherapy refers to more than two patients coming together for psychotherapeutic aims. Group psychotherapy is conducted for two primary reasons:
  • It allows for the complexity of our relational patterns to be expressed and addressed in a safe environment with the guidance of a psychologist.
  • It offers a significant cost-saving to budget-conscious patients, as an hourly rate is shared amongst patients.

Various psychotherapy groups are available. The groups include DBT (dialectical behaviour therapy) groups for adolescents or adults, a nurture group for young to middle childhood kids, and an antenatal group. Groups tend to arise as the needs of the patient population are identified. You are welcome to contact me for more information on the groups currently running.

CURRENT GROUPS:
  1. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) group for adolescents that is run by myself and co-facilitator (also a clinical psychologist) for a period of 16 weeks. This will take place Thursdays at 15:00. Takes place at the practice in Melville or Akeso Crescent Clinic.
  2. Nurture Group for 4-6 year olds (preschoolers) focused on cultivating socioemotional skills in a group context. Takes place Wednesdays at 14:30 at the practice in Melville.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Group - Adolescents

The DBT groups at the practice are aimed at adolescents who struggle with intense and overwhelming emotions, impulsive actions, difficulties in relationships and prolonged feelings of emptiness. During the six week period, skills training will take place focused on understanding and addressing these struggles. Sessions are 1,5 hours weekly, with additional individual feedback sessions to adolescents and a support system for parents. Ideally, DBT groups are conducted alongside individual psychotherapy.
